Supply Questions

I've had a lot of questions lately about equipment to take out painting. One reason is that The Tuscany Workshop is coming up and students are gearing up to travel. The biggest advise I can offer is to "Pack Light"! Jenny Reynolds, Karen Hagan and I went for almost three weeks painting last year and swore we would never carry more than 3 t-shirts, 2 pair of shorts, two skirts and clean underwear - there is a small town in the Cinque Terre that has a lot of our clothes and left over art supplies because we "purged" out travel gear one night!
Easel - I take an Open M Box (www.openboxm.com) in the 10x12 size. It's easy to carry, packs in a small wheeled duffel bag and can carry various sizes of panels.
Panels - www.canvaspanels.com is my choice, but RayMar also makes good ones, and makes painting carrier that's lightweight to carry wet paintings
Paints - because of airline regulations, I pack my paints in my checked bag, and carry three small primary colors in my Carry on just in case. Never carry turpentine, palette knives or solvents. I also recommend NEVER buy the student grade paints - if you are going to invest your time and passion to painting, invest in good professional paints.

the last day in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, and the tripod and I said "enough!"

"Monday's Beets"

Mondays I have a class of four - which is great fun. This week I set up beets, which I have never painted before. Now that I am back in the studio at home (the wonderful one down on King Street has some major structural issues, and rain and dust are just not condusive with paintings!)
So I did a demo and everyone painted as well. Lots of talk on values and how to strengthen those darks. And everyone came up with a great painting!
